Abandoned Man Hospital Man Appalachian Regional Hospital Man, West Virginia Random piece of medical equipment that found its way into the middle of the hall. I have no clue what it is or what it does. In 1954 construction began on a hospital in the small coal mining town of Man, West Virginia, and in 1956, the Man Memorial Hospital opened its doors as part of the Miners Memorial Hospital Association operated by the United Mine Workers of America. The MMHA would eventually evolve to become Appalachian Regional Healthcare by 1986, and the hospital became Man Appalachian Regional Hospital. In the early 1990s, a new wing was added to Man ARH to house the emergency department and to expand the busy hospital. In 2000, ARH decided to close the Man hospital for financial reasons, reporting five straight years of losses by Man ARH, although poor management on the part of its operators is suspect. The hospital was immediately sold to a community non-profit organization, which took over operations of the hospital, renaming it Man Community Hospital. By 2001, the hospital was permanently closed and subsequently abandoned, again for suspicious reasons. Today, the old hospital sits decaying and vandalized in a region desperate for health care.
